They generally try to offer upgrades to returning guests. Bottom line, two tips:

1. If a particular room or resort is important to you, pay for it. There are no guaranteed upgrades.

2. It can't hurt to ask!

It is all based on availibility.  It depends on how full the resort will be during your bisit.  If occupancy is high upgrades will be few and far between.  If occupancy is low then the chances improve dramitically.

Right now, occupancy is Riveria Maya is low. . .65%.  It is even lower in some areas.  Lindo was no where near capacity.  I just got back yesterday, and was able to see all of the room types.  Ask for a room on a higher floor, maybe a corner.  I saw no advantage in a suite, but it doesn't hurt to ask.  The men working check-in seemed more accomodating than the women.  Not a stereotype, just a personal observation.  If you do not like the room you get, ask to be moved. . .just be polite and patient.  I have found them to be quite accomodating once they understand what you want.  Language can be a barrier.

HI with kids i wouldnt. Maya doesnt have their own pool you use the lindos but its freaking huge.  But if you dont wanna walk too far just stay at the lindo.  We just got back yesterday and we have 2 little kids and we were just around the corner from the wave pool which only has waves once a hour for a few hours duing the day.

You lost me with the last post.  Huh  The Maya buildings aren't any further from the big pool than the Lindo buildings are. I would think people with kids would enjoy the extra space in the rooms.

How much is a standard upgrade?  We are staying at the del Mar next week and I emailed them a few weeks ago and mentioned we were return guests.  We're hoping for a upgrade to the Lindo but I'm curious how much more it would be per person.  Any help would be great, thanks!

It depends on time of year and occupancy, among other factors. Generally when I've priced the resorts, the difference between the Del Mar and the Lindo is in the neighborhood of $300 per person, per week.
