We have our first trip to the Cancun area booked for June 2006.  We are going through American Airlines vacations.  They had the option of a "Junior Suite" instead of a regular room.  I can't find any info on the difference either through AA or Iberostar's website.  What is the difference and is it worth the upgrade price?  We have a family of two adults and four teenagers, so we need two rooms.

hockeyinaz,

Iberostar Tucan Junior Suite Oceanfront All 24 suites have the same amenities as the Run of House rooms. Half of them have double beds with two sofas and the other twelve have one king bed with two sofas. Each suite features and oceanview.

Map - Building 10 - right on the beach

Building 10

Junior suite:

Hope this helps,
George

My family stayed at the Tucan in August (2 adults and 3 kids - 13, 9, and 6).  We were in building 11, in two rooms across the hall from each other.  This building is closest to the beach without moving up to the suite level (and the added cost).  My husband and I were facing the outside of the hotel so we could see the ocean, and the kids were facing the inside of the hotel (the pool), and as we were on the lower level they jumped over the terrace to the pool.  IT WAS PERFECT!  I would not invest in the suites, as it is really only the addition of a slightly larger living area (all rooms have a couch and the rooms are a very good size) and a straight on view of the ocean.  My husband and I are real ocean lovers and were very happy with the room!  We would not, however, have been happier with a room any further back than building 12.  My older son (now 14) loved this room ... he got to the disco easily and had great access to the beach and pool.

We were very patient when we arrived (if you call sitting in the lobby with a drink and going to the buffet for lunch patient!!) and received the rooms we wanted.  I would not invest the $, I would ask for building 11 or 12 and plan on waiting for the room with a smile on your face.

We stayed in a jr suite (my husband and I) last april and again this coming April.  We got a jr suite because I wanted to be on the ocean and it was our 1st year anniversary.  I don't think I would get a regular room after this. It wasn't that big of a difference maybe $200-300.  I didnt want to take the chance of being too far away from the beach. Even if you make requests we seem to go in late winter early spring when it's still busy you may not get what you want if you make a request to be close to the beach and not get a suite.  I like being right on the beach.  We were married in St Thomas a year before this and the beach means alot to us. My friends are staying in reg. rooms.  Here is my email if you have any questions.

We used GoGo to plan our wedding to StThomas 1.5 yrs ago.  We had 1 issue but I don't need to get into it.  It doesnt pertain to this.
Anyways enough about that.  We are using GoGo this time around with same travel agent.  In my expereince in the past with Gogo and with using a different company(delta) they were never the ones we met with to transfer us.  Our transfers were done with other companies.  We just looked for the delta sign where the transfers were but they were not wearing shirts that say that.  Neither for gogo in St Thomas.

We've booked Ocean View  (junior suites) trhough our travel agent in UK. For two weeks we paid about £400 ($680) etxra. We haven't been to Mexico before but just wanted to have the ocean to wake up to every morning. Apparently the rooms are a little bit bigger than the regular rooms; can't wait until late January 2006.  elefant

beach2 knatick has it right. I would think the only reason to go junior suite is the ocean front. The difference is only the one sofa and maybe 4 foot of living room area. The rooms are identical other than that. Also I must tell you that on that side is a ocean side restaurant and the access path is right next to building 10 and 11 and early in the moring if you may be awakened by the early morning "traffic" outside. Our personnel perference is building 13 or 14 Which are both centrally located between the beach area and the lobby/theater-buffet area. Both of these buildings are very quiet and building 14 does have adjoining rooms if you want to have yor children stay in one and have access wthout going outside. Hope you have found this info helpful and have a wonderful time in paradise(wish we were there!). good luck yipee

Hi Everyone,

We are going to the Tucan Dec 10th-17th. It will be our 4th time at an Iberostar property(we love Iberostar). We will be traveling with 3 other couples and our 3 year old. Would you recommend tipping the front desk to get in one of the building closet to the beach? We did that last year but I didnt know if it was the tip or what we were actually booked to get. I also have a friend that speeks spanish and I was going to call the week before we go to have him put in the request. Any thoughts. We have stayed at the Delmar and Beach also Punta Cana Iberostar. Cant say enough good things about this chain of resorts.

Um I didn't have any problem with traffic at all.  You can't hear anything in those cement walls! I stayed at the Quetzal side and it was silent. It's just me husband and we don't have kids yet so we still do it all up when we vacation. Just my opinion.

We got there early (when people were checking out) and were willing to wait.  We decided long before we went that we would wait patiently (having lunch and a drink) to get the room we wanted.  We ended up in building 11 on the Tucan side and LOVED IT.  It is the closest building to the beach without paying a lot extra for building 10 (facing the beach).

Thanks to all for your excellent info.  Special thanks to George for the photos.  I think I'll go with the suites for the ocean view.
